In this video presented by Chris Tisdell, we explore the art of bisecting a line segment using nothing more than a circle arc template and a straightedge. The best part? Chris is demonstrating this on a classic blackboard with chalk!
We start with a line segment AB, which is just a piece of a line with two endpoints. Chris begins by drawing this line segment and labels the points where it starts (A) and where it ends (B).
Now, enter the circle arc template, our tool for this adventure. Chris places the centre of this template right at the beginning of the line segment, point A. He uses the template to draw an arc. This curve intersects the line segment at a new point, from which he then draws another arc.
He takes the circle arc template and moves it over to the other endpoint of the line segment, point B. He draws another arc from there, and this time, it intersects with our line segment AB at a different point, from which he then draws another arc.
Chris keeps moving the circle arc template, making those arcs closer and closer together.
Eventually, after Chris repeats this process a few times, two arcs meet. At this moment, Chris takes his straightedge and draws a line segment between these two intersection points.
This new line segment he just drew is special. It's not just any line segment; it's a perpendicular bisector. That means it chops our line segment AB right in the middle, and it does so at a perfect 90-degree angle.
Now, thanks to Chris Tisdell's demonstration, we've learned how to bisect a line segment using a circle arc template and a straightedge. It's like a magic trick for geometry lovers. This construction is incredibly useful in mathematics and engineering, helping us find the middle point of a line segment and create perfect right angles.
So, next time you need to split a line segment in half and create a perfect perpendicular line, you'll know just what to do. Thanks to Chris and his chalkboard wizardry, you've mastered the art of bisecting a line segment with style and precision!
